The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has launched a toolkit for performing analysis of personal data.

It walks organizations through some of the top privacy issues to think about from the start of a planned project, asks questions, and identifies some of the key risks.

The questions cover four themes: legality, accountability and governance, data protection principles and rights of data subjects.

The toolkit produces a short report with advice tailored to a project. However, the ICO said this does not guarantee that it is compliant with data protection law and that users must also seek advice from their organization’s data protection officer (DPO). .

“It is important that data protection is built in from the start when data analytics are used to process personal data,” said the ICO. “Not only is this the law, it’s a critical step in building public trust in technology and the way your company uses people’s data.”
